Weekend Report: Full steam ahead on the Cape Race!
Now that the preparations for our recent Volunteer and Staff Christmas party are behind us, our restoration team has turned its attention back to the Cape Race passenger car. As most of our community knows, we had the roof professionally rebuilt a couple of years ago. Now, our near term goal is to finish the exterior roof and repair all of the exterior windows in order to be able to move the Cape Race back into Roundhouse Park yet protect it from the elements.
The images below capture our team as they steadily make progress. Most of the windows have been rebuilt, given new glazing and, of course, a fresh coat of paint. The target is to have two coats of red paint on the exterior of the glazed windows before installation and also at least one coat of mahogany colour on the inside of each window. The kitchen area windows still have to be fixed up and waterproofed and we are beginning to tackle them.
A beautiful cast brass draught excluder was also removed, cleaned and polished.
Our goal is to move Cape Race out in a few months as we plan to then move CNR Steam Locomotive #6213 into the stall for some needed mechanical work.
