Video: How to build an underground transformer station!
Toronto Hydro has just announced that a The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) will arrive on-site tomorrow (Saturday, February 1) in Roundhouse Park. Over the next three months, this 176 ton machine will dig its way north until it meets the existing tunnel beneath the intersection of Lower Simcoe and Front Streets. The initiative even includes something they say is akin to a miniature (underground) railway.
They have also produced the animated 4 minute video (see above) to illustrate how they will construct the Clare Copeland Transformer Station on the western edge of Roundhouse Park. It is quite interesting. Click on it to view the action.
They also have advised everyone that the site looks completely different from when construction kicked-off in 2013, and it changes significantly every day to meet an aggressive schedule (see image below). If you haven’t been in the area lately, have a look at their on-site camera, which captures progress by taking photos four times per hour. The photos can be viewed as a time-lapse video.
