This Saturday, September 11, at 1:30 PM, Heritage Toronto is sponsoring the Marlborough/Summerhill walking tour. TRHA members Derek Boles and Ed Freeman will be leading the walk. Although the walk is not exclusively geared towards railways there is much of rail interest since the route follows the CPR North Toronto Sub. for over a kilometre.

The Summerhill area is one of Toronto’s most diverse and interesting neighbourhoods and the Canadian Pacific Railway had a lot to do with its development over the years. At various times, the neighbourhood has included grand estates, workers’ cottages, middle class homes, light-to-medium industry, railway yards, hotels, recreation and the city’s principal reservoir. Although the area is still bisected by one of the busiest railway freight lines in Canada, Summerhill now features upscale condominiums and high-end retail arrayed along Yonge Street. The neighbourhood is anchored by the beautifully restored North Toronto Station, which has received several awards for its adaptive reuse of a heritage structure.
