Summary
Meadowvale Station was built by the Credit Valley Railway in 1878 while construction was progressing north towards Orangeville. It was the first stop north of Streetsville Junction on the Orangeville Branch, and was located about 1.4 kilometers southwest of the small community of Meadowvale on the south side of Old Derry Road. The station was a rectangular board-and-batten structure with a pitched roof and a single chimney in the middle, following a standard design used extensively by the Credit Valley Railway early on. It would have contained only the most basic amenities, with little more than a waiting room, a baggage room, and the station agent’s office. The Canadian Pacific Railway gained control of the Credit Valley through one of its proxies, the Ontario & Quebec Railway, in 1883. Meadowvale Station saw a total of four passenger trains per day by 1884, reflective of the rural and unpopulated nature of the Orangeville Branch.
As automobiles started to appear during the early 20th century, branch line passenger ridership was one of the first things to feel the effects. Several old stagecoach routes in the area were turned into provincial highways in the 1920’s, allowing for a higher amount of car traffic at faster speeds than before. Canadian Pacific began replacing the Orangeville Branch’s conventional steam- or diesel-powered passenger consists with self-propelled Budd Rail Diesel Cars in 1956, which were significantly cheaper to operate in light of the ridership decline. Service was reduced to just one departure in each direction by 1957, but increased back to two once Budd RDCs were fully implemented in the early 1960’s. It was simultaneously relegated to a flag stop, meaning that all trains would need to be flagged down to minimize unnecessary stops. By the late 1960’s the station building was rented out to a feed dealer while remaining in use as a flag stop by Canadian Pacific, and service ended entirely over the Orangeville Branch in 1970. The feed dealer continued to occupy the station until it was torn down in 1976, just a couple of years short of a century old.
