Field Report: Train Touristique de Charlevoix

Over the recent Thanksgiving Holiday, I had the privilege to have breakfast on board a local tourist train that runs from Quebec City all the way to La Malbaie, Quebec – 140 kilometers in length. The train operates on the old CN Murrybery Subdivision.

The culinary experience on board was extremely magnificent and the breath taking views of Mother Nature were wonderful. The vibrant color of fall was quite noticeable as we rumbled through the foliage. At times we had to slow down due to tight clearances.

The train runs yearly through April to Mid-October. It provides breakfast, lunch, and dinner trains with different Culinary Masters to experience on each of its trains.

Rolling stock Information about the Le Massif De Charlevoix Line:

  • Two 1800-hp RS-18 locomotives
  • Two railcars each equipped with a Caterpillar generator, baggage stowage area and additional cold storage for the kitchens (HEP)
  • Eight entirely refurbished Pullman Standard railcars with individual kitchen facilities:
    • Six railcars accommodating 62 passengers
    • Two 60-passenger cab cars, also adapted for persons with reduced mobility (these railcars will be integrated into the convoy in winter 2012)
