A Look into the Interior of the Coal Tower!

As reported in an earlier news posting, the Coaling Tower is being stabilized through an extensive repair and maintenance program. This has allowed for access to document the state of the interior. Here we share some photos of what was found.

In the picture at left above, we have a view of the coaling tower’s east side. In the middle picture, we view the machine house’s east side which is now uncovered showing the machinery doors and the hoisting beam. In the picture above at the right, we see the concrete reinforcing rod exposed prior to a new layer of concrete being added underneath the tower.
In the picture at the lower left below, we find the coal-hoist bucket chain. The coal originally moved up on the left and empty buckets came down on the right. In the middle picture below, we see the bucket-chain return sheave showing the coal bin delivery chutes on the right. Finally, in the lower left photo below, we see north side interior of the machine house, showing the bucket chain drive motor, gearbox and drive-chain guard (in the red ‘box’).
