Restoring the brake valve and air pressure gauge in the TH&B Caboose – Part 1 of 2

In the picture below we see the air pressure gauge and the air pressure control valve in the TH&B Caboose.   This equipment provided the conductor in the caboose control over the brake pressure in the train’s brake system.

They have been stripped, serviced and reinstalled in the caboose. We plan to test them in service on our train set in due course.

In the days when there were no radio systems  to allow the conductor in the caboose to communicate with the engineer driving the train, the conductor would “blip” the train’s brake line to signal the engineer to stop the train in the case of any problems such a “hot boxes” being spotted from the cupola in the caboose.
